Goodbye 2009!

This past year has been very good to us, with the normal ups and downs of any year of life, we were blessed and came out overall pretty happy, healthy and fairly unscathed.

Last year I was so happy to say goodbye to 2008, while it was the first year of my baby's life it was one of the most difficult times of my life. As 2008 rounded the corner into 2009 things were looking so much brighter for us and well...I just wanted to move on!

I don't exactly feel that way about 2009. There was no major health scares or new houses to buy, no shocking revelations or crazy new transitions to get used to. All in all we were just a normal young family, settling into our new house and moving from babyhood to toddlerhood with our little guy.

I am a bit nervous about 2010- once again new and unchartered territory lies ahead of us as we become parents to not one, but two little dudes. The number one question is will the birth go o.k.? Getting over that hurdle will be the most dramatic ( hopefully!) but surely not the most challenging. Nervous or not I am also extremely hopeful, optimistic and excited. How can you not be? 2010 with it's new beginnings is bright and promising.

Happy and Healthy New Year to all!!! Bring on 2010!!!

Well......

It's a BOY!!!!!!!

I must say, I was sure I would be totally disappointed to see another lil' winky ( I hate to admit that and yes everyone just wants a healthy baby but we are all human and humans are strange creatures and welllll...I always wanted a little girl and little girl clothes are so cute...and blah blah blah.

Going in my heart was pounding. I was excited and scared and honestly just wanted to see the brain and heart and all that good stuff looking...good. Great news is the tech said everything looked good and then we saw it. That little thing hanging between the legs. And you know what??

I could not stop SMILING for ear to ear. We left, me clutching the cutest ultrasound profile picture ever and the biggest goofiest grin on my face. I am so happy to be adding another lil' man to my house!!!

My husband, he's a bit shell shocked. Not the kinda "man's man" guy he was hoping for pink and hoping his house would not be destroyed by another bruiser. Oh and boys love their mama's, lol.

At least he is open for number three. I have always wanted three anyway =)

Pink or Blue?

Tomorrow I find out if I am destined to be queen of the castle, or if I will share my throne with a little princess! I am very excited, I would love a little girl but I am sure Noah would love a rough and tumble playmate so we shall see ;) I find myself going back and forth between anxiety and excitement- I just want to see and hear the words that this little bean is healthy!

Christmas was fun, although just like last year Noah was sick! I swear, what is it with kids and getting sick for christmas, it's a tradition around here! Noah continues to ask for mis-mis claus ( christmas claus is what he calls santa, lol) and seems very confused that Rudolph and frosty are no longer on t.v. every night. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire holiday season and look forward to any more ( healthy) holiday's to come!

I must say, waiting for this big ultrasound is like waiting for christmas morning all over again....

New things

With the new year only a few weeks away, a new baby on the way and a little boy who is getting bigger and bigger by the day I have reflecting on new/fresh starts. What do I want from 2010, or more importantly what do I want for our growing and changing family?

To start, I would love to be more present. Not in the day but in the moment. As Noah gets bigger I miss the early days and the sweetness of a baby. I was not a present mother back then and I can only hope I will be more present for Noah as he grows and as we introduce a new little one into our triad.

No more food battles with Noah. So what if he only eats pasta, rice, pizza, chicken nuggets, cheese, yogurt, applesauce, crackers, cookies, oranges, grapes, banana's, cereal, toast, peanut butter, waffles, some soups...see that list is not that bad.

Rebuilding things with my husband- 4 years later we need some polishing up ;)

New family traditions- to start, dinner at the table and not in front of the t.v.

Healthy weight loss after this baby

A lot less drinking

.....2010, I am excited for you and the years ahead but mostly I am excited for right now when Noah is waking from his nap and baby is rolling around in my tummy.

Tiny reminders

I have started to feel baby move, tap tap and swoosh is basically it right now but it's amazing none the less. This is my favorite part of pregnancy and I am so excited to be experiencing it right now. Noah was super active in the womb ( and out, lol) and I felt him early on like I am feeling this one, if these early pokes are a sign of what is to come I may have another monkey on my hands! Tiny reminders of life's smallest miracles.

Fear

It happened, suddenly and with no warning. I was up late, watching "Mystery Diagnosis". Before I even go on I should add, I should never.ever.be.watching.this.show. Especially when pregnant. It sucked me in, a little girl born with cataracts, she had tremors and developmental delays. No one could diagnose her. Mom gets pregnant with baby number two, everyone assures her this baby will be ok. He is born with cataracts. I lost it. Logically I know Noah is showing no symptoms, that the symptoms he had at birth miraculously resolved and we have moved on without an issue since. He did have elevated liver enzymes at about 6 months which no one could really explain other than he may have had a virus, but that still nags at me. What if this baby is born with a swollen brain and seizures and apnea issues? It would not only rip my heart out but it would mean something is wrong with Noah. In the show it turned out that the kids both had a very rare genetic syndrome with a live expectancy of seven, seven. That poor mama.

So since that show I have been so very fearful. Honestly I want to enjoy being pregnant but I can not wait for May to get here and for me to pop out a 100% percent healthy baby, I need to breathe a sigh of relief. For now, I will be staying away from discovery health and google....fear is a wasteful emotion isn't it?

What's the point?

I am still not sure who, if anyone is reading my blog anymore. It's sort of been shoved to the wayside with the excitement of my pregnancy and my life being blissfully drama free these past few months. I was however caught by surprise a few days ago when someone posted a strange comment, stating my posts were full of grief and asking why I blog with people who have lost their children. While I am still very confused at that latter statement, I was taken a bit by the opinion that my posts seem to be from someone who is grieving, because while yes, I did grieve when Noah was born ( flame me if you want but you were never in my shoes), and I still have moments of anger regarding his first year being filled with so much stress and sorrow over the unknown, these days I am so filled with happiness, love and gratitude for my miracle it seems my heart might burst. I have said this before but will recap. Yes, Noah is fine. Yes, all signs point to him being "o.k". But it was not always like this. Giving seizure meds to a newborn, taking him to neurologists and geneticists, worrying that he had some incurable degenerative disease...those posts, they were filled with grief and rightfully so. I got a chance to wake up from my nightmare and believe me I know how lucky we are but that does not make it all go away. I don't know why I feel the need to explain myself, this is my blog, my space to vent....but I just do not like to be judged in this poor light.

:::ahhhh:::::

Which leads me to some feelings that I need to a) leave this blog for good, or b) make it private. Seeing some unpleasant comments left a bad taste in my mouth and left me wondering- who is reading this? I don't post our names but I post my sons first name and his picture. Is that safe? The internet is a crazy thing and I am thinking I may have "leaked" us a little too far. I feel like I put my heart on my sleeve only for someone to laugh at it. Maybe it's time to protect it a little better. Maybe it's the hormones talking, it's just what has been stewing in my mind since last week.

Once this baby is born ( we find out in a month if it's a Tessa or a Kai ( or Mason or Oliver, lol) I will start a new blog, one that's a bit more anonymous and less dramatic...one I wou;dn't cringe at if my mother read =)

Not sure what my point is, or what is was 2 years ago when I started blogging, but I am still glad to have a space to vent....I would call it a judgement free zone but that's not the case, and that's fine since it's public but all in all it's my space and if you don't like me, you don't have to read about my life.

Balancing act

Last night I went to an open house for centered birth, a group of woman who specialize in pregnancy related things such as doula's, hypno-birthing and yoga. My friend is part of this group and I wanted to go out and support her as well as get some information on all of the above offered services. I am hoping in a way this pregnancy will provide me with some "healing" but trying to balance that with not being selfish and embracing that this pregnancy is as unique as the baby growing inside of me and well, it's not too much about me and more about the life I am "hosting" =)
I got talking to these woman, shared my birth story and listened to their wisdom. These woman are very "natural", against hospitals and epidurals and modern medicine. It's such a balancing act for me because while I agree and hear what they are saying, I am also scared since I know that things can and do go wrong during childbirth. I never know who to believe, who to listen to, so many opinions and options. For now I am taking it one day at a time, going with my gut and listening to my doctors whom I have grown to trust.

*** and on an aside, I had someone post a really nasty comment on my blog about networking with "babylost" mothers. I am not sure if someone stole my "identity" but I don't network with anyone on the internet- I do happen to read and sometimes comment on a blog of a mom who lost her son ( she also has me on her blogroll but she put me on there on her own doing , if you take offense ask her to take me off) , and the reason I connected to this mom is because I had a connection to her sister in law a few years ago when Noah was first born. So please, get your story right before you come on here, judge me and make false accusations. ***

Introducing, The Sequel....

NT scan went well, measurements were well within normal limits, another hurdle down, a million more to go =) This baby was nothing like Noah was, it was so "chill", the tech had to poke and prod to get it to move and it would slowly stretch, squirm and go back to relaxing. Noah was bouncing off the walls during his NT scan.....is there hope for an easy baby ;)

11/9- destined for drama?

Yesterday I bought myself a pass to the ER. I was puking pretty much non stop all day and could not keep down anything, even water. After 6 or so hours and very nasty green bile I decided to call my obgyn who of course said I needed to go to the hospital. I got settled in, hooked up to my I.V. and suddenly remembered, two years ago I was in labor with Noah, in a hospital, hooked up to an I.V. Oh the irony!

Today I am feeling better, just in time for my boys SECOND birthday, I can't believe he is TWO!!!! I am so proud of how far he has come and I look forward to our future together!

Happy Birthday little bear!

Party Time

It's that time of year again, leaves are all but fallen, Halloween is over, holiday's are on the horizon. What does all this mean? Noah is having a birthday and my BIG boy is going to be TWO! I have been busy putting the final touches on his party for this saturday, pony rides and 30 family members and friends = stress + a heck of a good time. I am a little bummed I can't partake in my famous sangria this year but of course even more excited to be carrying baby brother/sister!
This morning as I was driving to work I started getting all misty eyed. Not sure if it was the pregnancy hormones or the fact that my "baby" is truly no longer a baby.....but seriously, where does time go??? And of course, thinking back to those dark early days, the NICU and what lay ahead of us- My god we have all come so very far in only 2 years. What a miracle I have and what a blessing!

Memories

I did not realize that being pregnant again was going to drudge up so many memories, both good and bad. But when I started crying at the doctors office today, recounting Noah's birth for what seems like the millionth time I realized just how hard this is all going to be.
The appointment was also full of good moments however- I got to hear the baby's heartbeat on the doppler and my new doctors and midwives are just nothing short of amazing. She requested Noah's birth records and really just eased my mind- I feel like they are listening and supporting but also assuring me that this will not happen again.
This will not happen again....

Blah!

I've got a case of the first trimester blues- tired, cranky and puking. Add in a two year old and it makes for a long and rough 12 weeks! I am *almost* 9 weeks so it seems there may be a light coming at the end of this tunnel! I waft and wane between being extremely excited and extremely freaked out by the fact that I am expecting. I have 7 more months to get used to the idea!

I have been busy planning Noah's 2nd birthday although I am not quite as creative as last year with the homemade invites and coordinating decor/theme. We are doing pony rides and then a party back at the house- simple enough but it's starting to feel like a huge task since we have a large family. I am thinking baby number 2 will get the shaft when it comes to pictures, handmade things and such, it's already getting tiring and we are still just on Noah =)

x2

Yesterday I was about ready to puke or breathe into a paper bag waiting for my appointment. I envisioned seeing a tiny beating heart and just being on cloud nine for the rest of the day. Don't get me wrong, seeing that peanut and that little flicker was wonderful, such a relief and a blessing. I drove and met my mother to pick up Noah. He was very very cranky due to his lack of napping. I was tired and hungry and had a 45 minute drive home. On the way my husband informed me he would be working late. Really trivial things but enough to send my hormones raging. I was in a "funk" for the rest of the evening.
Since we all have a bad cold, I was up tossing and turning most of the night. During one of my mid-night wake ups I started thinking about the day and how my mood turned. It was then that I got thinking how scary having two children is. I mean, with what we have been through with number one I am petrified to do this again. Seeing that little beating heart brought it all into reality- we are really having another baby! How will I have enough love, patience, time, energy, the list goes on and on. As I lay there panicking I had to keep talking myself "down", it will all work out, it will all be ok. I know in reality this is probably true and the odds of another traumatic birth are slim but it's still scary and still enough to keep me squirming!

Heartbeat, check!

So I can scratch one thing off of my every growing list of worries, baby K is measuring right on target and has a healthy heartbeat!!! I don't know what it is, a toddler going through the terrible two's, wicked morning sickness, and a really bad cold hitting our house this past week - I just haven't felt the urge to blog. However, I knew I needed to make a heartbeat announcement since it is really good news =)

Happy 4 years!

Last year I posted some wedding pictures, so I won't bore with more of those! But this picture cracks me up. It's from our rehearsal dinner. When we got married I was at my smallest, about 110 pounds and my husband was at his heaviest- ever.  My hubby is 6'3 and was like a linebacker, lol. I get a good laugh because 4 years later I am about as far away from 110 pounds as one can get. My husband? Skinny, skinny skinny. It's not fair =) But at least I am the trim one in our wedding pictures!!!

6 weeks

Today I am 6 weeks and while I want to savor this pregnancy, I can't wait until I am past 6 weeks 5 days, the day I started spotting the last time. I am pretty optimistic since old mother morning sickness has come a' knocking and while it's pretty shitty, it's also a good sign- so yes, puking makes me happy!
Only 8 more days until we ( hopefully) see the heartbeat!

Fall in Love

Optimism

In an attempt to prevent a daily freak out I have a few mantra's that I repeat in my head over and over and over again. When I think of the next 9 months it's pretty hard to not get overwhelmed or riddled with anxiety and fear. Since I am sure the last few weeks of this pregnancy will be the worst considering Noah's history, I am trying, despite the miscarriage to chill for now. The fact that I am less likely to miscarry than I am to carry this baby to term is what has been getting me through. I took a sick day today. The weather here is gorgeous, Noah and I just spent the morning shopping and now that he is settled in for his nap I am sipping my non-fat decaf no-whip pumpkin spice latte ( say that 3 times fast ;) Today is a good day, I am pregnant and I love my baby.....

5 weeks

Today I am 5 weeks pregnant, the same amount of weeks that our last little nugget stopped growing, the sac measured 5 weeks when I should have been 7 weeks. Today I am willing this bean to grow, Grow, GROW!

Green

I have posted about jealousy before and as selfish and immature as I feel I thought where better to let out my feelings.
Today I called my best friend, the friend I have had since I was 11 years old. My maid of honor. I told her I was pregnant and she had news for me too....turns out she is 10 weeks pregnant herself, due about 5 weeks before me. Immediately I was THRILLED! We spent the next hour talking about morning sickness and cravings. We made plans to go shopping for maternity clothes. She is in Jersey and I an in New York so we live far but vowed to get together, what a great journey for us to share!
Once we hung up I started feeling really moody. I had cramps. Was I having a miscarriage? Noah wouldn't eat lunch, I was getting extra annoyed. My husband- I got short with him too. I started thinking- what made me suddenly so snappy? Then I realized.....I was jealous. Not jealous that N is pregnant, because really I am very excited. I think the jealousy stemmed from her being almost in the second trimester while I am barely 5 weeks, fresh from the throws of a miscarriage. I also realized how much a miscarriage would devastate me. Not that it wouldn't have if N wasn't pregnant, just that now I would have a reminder of what could have been.
I am trying SO hard to stay positive. SO hard not to let the anxiety get the best of me. But fact of the matter is that until I see a heart beating on october 6th, I am going to be petrified every single day.

Dr. Google

When Noah first came home from the hospital I spent hours, and days, and weeks, and months scouring medical journals and articles on neonatal seizures. If you ever google neonatal seizure what comes up is very unpleasant and the result of that sent me into a depressed and anxious state for at least Noah's 1st year. Once I stepped away from the laptop I realized how unhealthy it was to google things and then take what I read as truth and fact .

Now that I am pregnant again I am once again turning to google. After the miscarriage I have started to scour data, hormone levels, reoccurrence rates, symptoms, lack of symptoms, progesterone, hcg numbers- you name it, I have looked it up. After I got my blood work results on Thursday afternoon I couldn't wait to get home and start "googling".  Have I not learned my lesson?

Yesterday I had a doctors appointment, she was very reassuring. I have an ultrasound on October 6th- 3 weeks. Hoping, praying and wishing that we see a healthy beating heart. I will be beyond devastated if we don't. Until then, I am turning in my doctorate from google and leaving it up to the real professionals....

Waiting game

I go in waves of being really really positive and starting to freak. I had my 2nd blood drawing yesterday and I am hoping to get a call today telling me everything looks good, if no call I have an appointment tomorrow. I keep preparing myself that they are going to call and tell me my levels are low, but on the flip side I quickly "shoo" this out of my head and tell myself everything is ok. Craziness! I really do have to take this one day at a time and for someone as hyper as myself taking things slowly is very very hard. On a positive note my boobs have started randomly burning, taking this as a good signs. Grasping for straws?  I don't know but for today I will take what i can get =)

Jinx?

So I put a pretty little "ticker" on my blog. I was thinking of not doing this until I at least see a heartbeat but today I am pregnant so why not celebrate? I don't want to jinx myself but I also want to enjoy this, such a fine line.
Yesterday I went and had my progesterone and my beta's taken, I go back on the 16th for more blood and then an appointment on friday. I am feeling mostly calm and positive but when I start getting excited I always have this nagging feeling that I shouldn't get excited yet. Praying for good progesterone and beta's that double!
Since I am pee-on-a-stick happy ( and thank god for dollar store pregnancy tests) I have been taking a test every morning. They keep getting darker, and today's like was the darkest yet- this make me very happy. I could stare at that line all day.....

Up and down, and then back up

I waited until saturday morning to tell my husband. I knew he was going to freak. We got the bill for our school taxes this week, 5,000 dollars due by 11/5- ha! Needless to say we have been stressed about our finances. I knew that news of a baby would send him over the edge, and it did. The whole birth control "error" was really my husbands doing. Yes it takes two to tango but the man is the one in control of his ship sooooo when he got semi-mad I freaked. I am hormonal and of course on edge since that is where pregnancy sends me, so his getting mad did not really fly well. I wasn't going to tell anyone but since my at-times-a-complete-ass of a husband reacted the way he did, I called my mom. She told me to give him some time, which I did and by Sunday we were both starting to get excited about a new baby. Lots of ups and downs as usual.
I am trying not to psycho analyze every pregnancy symptom ( or lack there of) but it's so hard to not constantly think something is wrong. It's going to be a long 40 weeks! And I thought that I'd never say this but I *hope* by breasts start burning and I am so pukeyI can't stand it....at least then I will know the little nugget is doing what it's supposed to be doing in there!!

MAYbe a baby?

I am pregnant. Two.pink.lines. Due date is May 25th, 2010. I am shocked. My husband has super sperm. NObody knows as I just found out. Thank God for my "Secret Blog". Please pray for a sticky baby!

Crying is for babies!

Noah did not cry- he started playing and didn't look back. I will admit I sobbed all the way to work but we both survived. Noah was happy all day and while he only ate ritz crackers for lunch he did take a two hour nap! Crying is for babies, not my BIG boy. Here is to hoping day 2 is as uneventful!

I got the daycare blues

Today I must drop my child, my everything off at a virtual strangers house. Yes I have met her and yes my coworker brings her daughter there but still, she really is a stranger, especially to Noah.  I know he is going to cry, probably scream. I know it's going to rip my heart out. I know we have no other option as I need to work. I know it will be o.k. ( at least thats what I keep telling myself!)Please pray for a painless transition!

Back to school

No I am not a teacher, nor do I have a school aged child yet but today, there is something refreshing and new about the very first day of school. Since I work at a residential treatment center with an on campus school I get to enjoy this momentous occasion somewhat and I can't deny that it brings me back to days of new teachers, no cloths and shoes and a whole new world of endless possibilities. Ahh, the joys of being a kid- if only we knew then what we know now!
I am sitting at my computer, eating my breakfast and watching Noah play. He is creating a dialogue where ( as I can make out) Truck is getting ready to go Night Night. What an imagination of this little guy. I wish I could bottle him up and keep him like this forever, a tiny little man. I wonder what he will be like in four short years when it is time for him to make that trek off to school. He starts daycare this week...that is bad enough!

ChaChaChanges

Today I took Noah to "Snip-it's", an overpriced haircutting chain geared for kids. Noah has had his haircut before but daddy has always taken him and since he is always mistaken for a girl and as his 2ND BIRTHDAY is looming I decided to accompany my guy for his new big boy look.
Here I was, camera in tow, all excited, and let me just tell you it was a disaster. Noah screamed as if someone was attempting to murder him. That poor girl, trying to make our "experience" fun....
the final result is very cute although I may have my mommy goggles on and I do miss his long hair.
On other change fronts, the air is getting crisper here in new york and as hard as fall can be, it's a lovely change. I was not sure if I was going to share this here or not but decided I would. We had a birth control error of sorts the other night, on CD16, otherwise known as my fertile peak. I know we said we were not going to start trying until November but I am secretly hoping I am pregnant. Trying not to get my hopes hope, but will test next weekend. Prayers for a sticky May baby perhaps?

Bye Bye August

August has been good to me. Between vacation time and "sick days" I have not worked a five day week this whole entire month. One of the perks of my job is the 7+ weeks of paid time I get! Today is my last vacation day before a long fall, and a crazy busy September. I can not believe how fast this summer went by, tomorrow is September!!!!
Today we are lounging in our jammies, watching some sesame street and later venturing out for another practice shoot. I am hopefully launching my photography this month and I am portfolio building- who better to practice on then my favorite model? Stay tuned!

Churning

As I previously posted, it's been a good couple of days round' here. I have been using some vacation time, taking 3 day weekends and it's been great. Noah is slowly starting to eat better, some days are better than others but I will take what I can get.

With fall coming, and Noah's two year birthday nearing I have been thinking of some way to donate something to the NICU although I am not quite sure what. I have not been back since we walked out those doors on 11-15-07 and while I am sure it would be a pretty difficult experience to go back there, I have this urge to do it. I feel like I am at a turning point in this healing process and in some ways it will give me some peace, closure. I also want the neonatologist and nurses to see Noah, to hear Noah and to realize and remember that giving parents hope is probably the best medicine you can give them in a time of sheer horror.

I was thinking maybe some edible arrangements for the nurses and maybe gift bags or something to donate to NICU families- I am just not sure what to fill them with. My bigger gears have been churning as far as starting a foundation that helps NICU families in the days and weeks that follow after their baby comes home- resources, PTSD and PPD screenings and group therapy. The social worker and therapist in me coupled with the I've been there factor realizes how desperately this is needed.  Big dream, but a girl can dream big right? For now I will stick with goodies but maybe someday.

Good Day

Lately I find myself missing the january baby that should have been. Putting TTC off until November makes it even worse. We went to the fair last night and it seems like I hone in on pregnant woman, woman who are about as pregnant as I would have been- ugh.  Lately I've been a little funky and hormonal. Today was such a needed breath of fresh air. Quiet work day. My mom babysat ( who could ask for better?). Afternoon at the park. Late nap ( still napping). Quiet house with a glass of wine to unwind with. Late summer evening. Simply a good day.

That time of year

If there are any original blog readers out there who read my blog from the start back when I blogged under a different name, you would know that last summer I was dreading fall. Autumn has always been my favorite season, I even chose to get married in October because in my opinion nothing beats the changing leaves and pumpkins, the smell of cinnamon, apple cider doughnuts...oh I could go on and on and on!
Everything fall now reminds me of Noah. The cusp of when life was simple and when one fleeting moment with the birth of my son changed our lives in more ways than one. Last year as the summer days were coming to and end and fall was nearing I was honestly a bit sad. I kept thinking back to "this time last year" in the fall of 2007 when my belly was the closest thing I had to a pumpkin and when the excitement of impending motherhood was hanging overhead. Fall 2007 was the last simple time of my life and in the fall of 2008 I was angry and bitter about the past year. Gladly as November 10, 2008 approached the sadness was not long lasting and was replaced by the celebration of my sons life and how far he had come and we had come as a family.
This year I am happy to report that no feelings of sadness have entered my head when thinking about the upcoming fall season. I am SO looking forward to hayrides, apple picking, pumpkin picking and planning Noah's SECOND birthday- how could there be room for any sad feelings here?
Fall is now my season of healing.
Lately I feel on the cusp of great things. What better time of year than now to get things rolling.

defense

I have posted about this before, but as I experience it almost daily I thought I would write about it again.

Parents are competitive.

People are asses sometimes.

I was at the park with Noah this morning ( called in sick!) and in the sandbox I had my first annoying encounter of the morning. A little girl was playing, she appeared Noah's age. Her mother was looking on. She asks me "how old is he, one?". I respond- actually he will be two in November. "Oh" she responds.  WTF??? there is NO WAY he appears to be one, he was almost the same size as her daughter who turns out will be two next month. Was she trying to piss me off?

A few minutes later Noah was shoveling sand and it was flying in the air. I gently asked Noah to stop since I didn't want sand to get in anyone else's eyes. " You should listen to your mother" she states, glaring at Noah.

Sometimes I hate people.

I know all parents feel the need to defend their child but I can't help but feel super defensive when it comes to Noah. When your child had a brain injury hours after being born ( in my case anyway) you feel an extra sting when people make stupid comments. I can remember when Noah wasn't walking at 12 months I felt SO defensive, or when he was a picky eater when it was time to start solids ( and still is!), I felt SO defensive. Talking? If I encounter a younger kid with a better vocabulary, you guessed it, SO defensive!

We had a good time at the park but that lady pissed me off- another ripple I guess.

They left this out of the manual

As I lay on Noah's floor beside his crib, pretending to go nigh nigh , I could not help but wonder where was my warning about this one? You know the warnings- the ones about sleepless nights, dirty diapers, etc. etc. This whole hysterical toddler who is suddenly afraid of his crib, the one who would eat waffles and bagels for breakfast lunch and dinner, certainly no warning or manuel came with his package!
Noah eats like crap but sleeps like a champ, I am still saying sleep and not slept because I am hoping and praying that this is a very quick phase. On saturday night Noah woke up at about 3am SCREAMING for Mama and Daddy, when I went in his room he was petrified and would not settle back in his crib, finally I brought him back in our bed where he slept the rest of the night. Sunday we had our a.c. fiasco, but again Noah would not go in his crib, he cried so hard he threw up! Last night was the worst. We had our night time routine, we read good night moon, we tried to give our night night kisses but Noah immediately started pouting, which turned to crying, which turned to full blown screaming. I brought him in his room, all the while he was screaming Mama and Daddy, nooooo nigh nigh. I let him cry for a few, he screamed, I checked on him and he was shaking. Really heartbreaking. This went on for TWO hours. I think he finally fell asleep due to sheer exhaustion from being so hysterical. Then, he woke up at 3am the same way, and screamed for another 1.5 hours before going back to sleep.
What is this all about??? Night terror on saturday has him terrified of his room??? Not sure how to handle this one...

Tantrum, adult style

Last night was one of this " this is so ridiculous I don't know if I should laugh or cry" moments.
Some background facts: Currently in new york it's about 90 degrees. The K family does not like the heat. My husband is a 29 year old baby. Add this together and throw in a very  tired toddler and you'll get the mess I am about to explain.

We always spend sunday's with my parents who live about 45 min away. We are in the midst of a heatwave and since there house is nice and cool we spent every last second there before it was time to leave. Our new house is duct for central air but with all things we sorta ran out of money in the end and decided to forgo the central air for now. Sounded good in November, not so good now.  I digress..... my father gave us an old A.C  to put in Noah's room since we have one in ours and his room was awfully hot.

We left around 8pm, got home at almost 9. My husband immediately starts frantically ripping the A.C out of our window to put that one in Noah's room and put the one my father gave us in our window. Clencher- the "new" A.C from my dad didn't really work. So now after all his "hard" work, Noah's room is freezing and ours is stifling. Why he didn't just leave our A.C alone is beyond me.

I put Noah to bed and we lay down to watch our sunday night True Blood. My husband is sweating and bitching and hops out of bed to switch the A.C's once again. Obviously he disturbes Noah in this mess and I can hear Noah SCREAMING and crying for DaDa and MaMa. I let him cry for a bit as he is almost 2 and I don't want to get him in the habit of waking at night again. After a few screams I went to check on him and he was COVERED in puke, must have puked from crying to hard.... gah!

So I gave Noah a bath, hubby switched the A.C.'s for what seemed like the 10th time and we all settled in by 10:15. Ahhh, life with two babies!

Heart and Head

As a social worker I often use the phrase "separate your heart from your head". The decision to have another baby fits this phrase perfectly. My heart aches to be pregnant, actually it has ached since I had Noah and I was on the quest to "re-write my version of childbirth. As time went on I knew I could not get pregnant just to try and heal from my experience with Noah but as he grew and time healed certain wounds I felt strong enough to give motherhood another go ahead. Then I had a miscarriage. Bad luck. Cruel twist. Random or tied to Noah's situation? Whatever the case, it sucked and it made my ache for another baby even stronger.
After the miscarriage it became clear that my husband was not ready for a baby. Not that he was glad I lost our January baby but in a way I think he was relieved. The economy is bad. We are late 20-somethings living in a brand new house. I drive a new volvo and my husband has a new truck. I am social worker and we all know we are not the highest paid people around. Yes some of the purchases were our choice, but we have also made a lot of good choices and just got the luck of the dice of being young adults in a recession.
Daycare is expensive. I have been lucky this past 21months and between my mother in law and mother we have had free childcare. In September we will be paying 120 a week for his 3 days of childcare ( cheap by some standards but still an extra 480 a month!). Logically if we times this by two kids and bump it to five days a week which it will eventually evolve to, it does not make sense for me to even work, and I need to work.
So that is where I must separate my heart from my head. My heart that aches to be pregnant now and my head that tells me the timing is just plain bad. My husband and I discussed it last night and of course I ended up in tears and slept on the couch, always the drama queen I am. This morning we had a less hormonal conversation and agreed on trying in November. Not the end of the world but also not ideal. I worry about waiting too long, it taking me awhile to conceive, having another miscarriage. But in the end my head tells me to stop worrying and my heart tells me it will all be ok.

21 Months and back from the beach!

What a glorious sun filled week we had! I must say, staying in a house with my husband, brother and parents was quiet the experience and while there was many a moment when I wanted to gauge my eyeball with a sharp object, I came back rested and motivated to start making some long overdue changes in my life.
It was so nice to spend the week with Noah as a family. While I often take vacation days and spend them with Noah, my husband only takes the week off once a year. To say Noah thoroughly enjoyed having his mommy and daddy would be an understatement. He had a talking explosion last week, repeating just about everything and saying some two work phrases. He also started saying "back" and in "come back" when anyone left the room- so cute! This morning when my husband left for work Noah proclaimed -BACK!!!!.... I have a feeling it will be a big adjustment having us back at work this week.
The daily grind is back in full swing, I called a daycare provider this week and secured a spot, she is my co-workers cousin who also watches her daughter. I am looking into a preschool as well but I still think Noah may need the buffer of a small in home day care for a few months before taking the huge plunge to preschool.

See ya'll soon

We leave tomorrow for our week at the beach. A week, sharing a house with my parents and brother. This should be fun but this also should be interesting ;) I will have lots of pictures to share when we get back!

Ripple effect

Lately I have been thinking a lot about my marriage ( it's hard not to with all the tension) and the ripple effect that Noah' birth has left behind. I picture a tiny dot representing his birthday and all these rings circling around it, each ring a new day, month, year. Last year when Noah was still so new, still just a baby, I had a hard time looking past that dot in the center. I was still so worried about him, still taking him to all sorts of specialists, and still stuck on what had happened and what the future would be like. As the days and months passed and Noah thrived, I used his birth as an excuse for why I was feeling like I was- anxious, sad, angry, tired and I blamed my husband for his lack of understanding.
Noah will be two in November. I can not believe it has been almost two years since that fateful day when my world changed forever, both good and bad. Looking back at all those ripples I can see now where I went wrong, where I placed blame, where I should have been happy instead of so so sad.
When you leave the NICU they have you sign tons of paperwork, but where was my warning on what all this would do to me and my marriage? J and I need to see a counselor, the ripples are getting ugly.
Lately, looking at Noah fills my heart with so much joy. Don't get me wrong, looking at him has always filled me with joy but he is turning into such a little man, learning new words everyday, has such a sill personality. It's a reminder that this is not because of him, it's because of how I reacted to a crappy situation and for once, for him, I need to actively change some things for the better.
It' s time to put 11-10-07 to rest ( expect of course making 11-10 a happy day filled with birthday wishes) and look forward, we don't need any more ripples in this pool

Monday Funday

Usually Monday's are, well.... Monday's. Today starts the last work week till' vacation ( we are leaving friday). It's sunny out, my hair isn't frizzy and Noah ate breakfast- can't get much better than that. I take that back, if Noah poops today that will just bring it over the moon! ( amazing how my life revolves around how much my kid ate and how much my kid pooped).
I am feeling better about the whole work incident both physically and mentally. This weekend was just what I needed, lots of trips to the playground, petting zoo and hikes along the hudson. I am ready to start (and end) this work week and head down to the beach on friday for some fun in the ( fingers crossed) sun.

Beat it

Yes I know, now that the whole death of Micheal Jackson hype is over I should not be quoting his songs but I could not think of a better title!

For the very few of you that read my blog, I am not sure if any of you know about my career. I am a social worker ( I have a BSW and an MSW in social work, my masters with a clinical concentration). I work as a therapist at an all boys residential treatment center which houses about 55 boys ages 10-21. My boys are in the enhanced program meaning they have a complex combination of developmental delays ( most with MR level IQ's and a few on the autism spectrum) and mental health issues ( schizophrenia, bi-polar, PTSD, ADHD, ODD to name a few). My job is challenging but I love it and would not trade it for the world.

Yesterday however, I was assaulted, actually attacked and while I have been "roughed up" before, never to that degree.

One of my boys, a almost 16 year old with PDD NOS, PTSD, ODD, ADHD and possible chromosomal issues that are yet to be determined, attacked me completely unprovoked. This is a boy I protect and advocate for, who I really really like and enjoy working with. He ripped a necklace off my neck that I got on my honeymoon and destroyed it. He shoved me and punched me in my back really hard. He pulled my hair trying to get my sunglasses off my head, and when he did he destroyed them too. My ego and my back were hurt and so were my feelings.

Today I feel like I got in  car wreck, I am really sore. This boy is BIG ( 200 plus pounds). I am sad that it happened and also sad that he feels sad ( he was really apologetic). I am sad that my necklace from mexico is gone. I am surprised how "sad" the whole situation made me.

exhale

O.k., whew. All better.
Today was a better, less drama filled day.
When I write about my marriage on here I often feel guilty and embarrassed afterward. I know that is silly since it's my blog and it's pretty secret as far as my real life identity goes but it's still kind of taboo, marital issues that is.
Work was all kinds of crazy today, plus I had to take Noah in for his 2nd Dtap ( yes I am that mom , the vaccine fearing, vaccine splitting one) so now let's just hope he has no reactions and all will be well in my neck of the woods!

Low Blow

To start, two posts in one day usually means it was not a good day.  Honestly, there was not one thing in particular that stood out, it was just me being tired and slightly hungover and my husband being his usual less than supportive self. The icing on the cake was the baby shower I attended, for my husbands co-worker's wife. Baby showers are a bit sore lately and I didn't really know anyone plus I was tired and really did not want to be there. So that, topped with my period, topped with ( surprise) Noah not eating dinner boiled over into an argument.
Sometimes I wonder if Noah would be better off if we were divorced. There is always tension in our home, in our car, wherever we go as a couple, tension follows. It's like we give off bad energy and I wonder how much of it Noah internalizes. The fighting, the arguing, the harsh words, I don't want my kid to grow up in a household like this. I really don't know how to make it better or if that is even a possibility. The saddest thing about it is having more kids- how selfish am I being for wanting to bring more kids into this picture?
So as I was walking up the stairs to "take space" away from my husband, he called after me stating I was a bad mother. Really, isn't that the lowest blow of them all? I usually don't cry when we fight but that one really stung. I already feel like a bad mom,  a selfish mom consumed with my own shit. I try not to sit on guilt to long, but in that moment I had to lock myself in our computer room and have a good cry.
I started a blog in an attempt to find other children who had a similar story to Noah's. As it grew and I grew I started writing about my feelings post partum, Noah's doctor's appointments, his milestones, etc. Back then I felt like a negative nilly because most of my posts were about my anxiety about being a new mom with a little birth trauma thrown in. It's really sad that back then was the happier blog, because now I just bitch about my marriage and how cloudy our household has become.
Over the bumps we go I guess....

Party Like it's 1999, or not.

Yesterday was my 10 year High School reunion and let me say, we all should have left 1999 where it belongs ( way in the back of our brains, shoved into a tiny corner never to be reopened). Initially I really did not want to go but I still have a couple close friends from high school who were going and I didn't want to regret not going, so I sucked it up and went. First off, everyone is older and fatter than I remember ( including myself) Also, the cliques still stayed in their respective corners. All in all it was funny but painfully awkward, I swear we had the most boring reunion in history. I drank way too much and smoked way to many cigarettes....I guess I was trying to channel my former- 1999 self. Don't think i'll be going to the one in 2019 and my liver and lungs will thank me.

A good laugh

Back in our younger days my husband and I were really funny and always had a great time pulling some kind of joke or laughing at our own insane humor.  Lately  we have been so adult and stressed and heavy and a huge part of me misses how carefree we were. Last night Discover Card called for the umpteenth time. Seriously. They call every.single.night. and read this stupid paragraph about some payment protection plan. So last night my husband answers the phone and he pretends to be me....he sounded like Mrs. Doubtfire. The discover card guy obviously realizes he is a man and hangs up, only to call right back ( mind you it's 8:55pm). So I answer it this time and I pretend to be a man with a deep husky voice and a southern drawl. The dicover card guy keeps saying " Mrs. K is that you, Mrs. K????", I kept repeating no sir, she's in the bathroom ( in my husky drawl). When we hung up my husband and I laughed for 10 minutes straight, just like the old days!!!!

Unnpregnant

My period was due yesterday. I usually cramp and have all the symptoms before it arrives and I don't. I know logically that I am not pregnant because really it's not very possible this month. I am mad that my body seems to be flawed and where I once boasted how regular and fertile I was I am now scared that having a healthy pregnancy and baby may not happen. So with all these thoughts swirling through my mind what do I do? I take the last digital pregnancy test of course! Why did I do that? I really don't know. Like I said, I know I am not pregnant, just late but I couldn't resist the urge. As the hour glass symbol ticked on the screen I could feel my pulse quickening and my heart pounding, and the not pregnant popped up and my heart sank. It was a total set up for disappointment and once again the sadness for january baby rushed back. I would be in my 2nd trimester, probably finding out the sex in a few week. I just hope my period shows up soon to give me some sign of regularity!!!

Crazy Lady

I swear, becoming a mother has made me crazy. At any given time I may or may not be a hormonal, frazzled, tense, anxious mess. And don't get me started about how my hair may look at that moment!

Before becoming pregnant with Noah I told everyone and their mother that I was getting ready to TTC ( try to conceive). I know in some circles this is taboo, too much information and some find it generally irritating but I was just so damn exited! Every time the subject came up my own mother would say Once you have a baby you can never go back. This statement used to irritate the living crap out of me, for once because it was coming from my mother and for two because I just knew in my heart of hearts that I was ready. How did we know we were ready? We weren't big "party-ers" anymore- check. We had done some traveling and with my fear of flying and newlywed expenses there would be no trips to europe anytime soon- check. We wanted to have a few kids and wanted to be youngish parents- check. I had this insane ache, itch, longing for a baby- check check check.

With that I got pregnant and the rest is history. Sort of. Missing from my check list is all the worry, anxiety, sleepless nights, fights with my hubby, tears, stretch marks, grey hairs.  Of course there is the laughter and crazy love but for all purposes we were pretty naive, then again I think all first time parents are.

So last night as Noah wouldn't eat his dinner, and I mean NO dinner for the second night in a row, I snapped. I went upstairs and I cried. We took Noah to the playground and I was pissed. Since when did how much chicken nugget my kid ate dictate my mood??? Where is my manual and where in gods name was my warning about this one??? By the end of the evening I felt better but then the guilt crept in. The i'm a bad mother because I yelled at my toddler for not eating his chicken nugget guilt.  I had to laugh at it, are our mother minds ever at ease? I have said it once and I will say it again- dear god bring me a healthy chubby sleepy sweet little girl, I love my healthy skinny hyper hot tempered little guy but another one may just send me over the edge.

A case of the Monday's.....

I have been hit by a bad case of the Monday's.  I have had Monday's off since November 2007, it was part of my "deal" that I had when I went back to work after having Noah. I was told it was temporary but as time went on, no one seemed to mind and my work got done so I figured that was how it would stay. Not so much. At the end of April my supervisor told me I had to go back to working 5 days. I could break it up, work a few long days and a few short days but it needed to be Monday through Friday. Due to the miscarriage and daycare issues I worked Monday's in May but then had them off in June. Last Monday I had off so today officially starts my new Monday work day.
I am sad already.
Monday was Mommy and Noah day. Monday was the day I got to "play" stay at home mom. We played around the house, did laundry, went to Target. Sometimes we even met up with friends. I am sad to admit that when Noah was a newborn stay at home Monday's kinda bummed me out, it was winter and I was lonely and I almost wished I was at work sometimes. Over time however I grew to love Monday's and in the past few months with the warm weather and Noah becoming a toddler, I learned to appreciate Monday even more.
The good news is I am working half day Monday's for now. Probably 12-6. I know it could be worse and I get to spend the morning with Noah, but it's just not the same thing as staying in our PJ's until noon or playing in the yard before 3pm nap time. I will also lose my beloved 4pm Monday nap time happy hour, although it can always be postponed.
If this is how I feel before going back to work half day on Monday's how the hell am I going to deal with daycare in September???
This letting go stuff is harder than colic!

20 months

I can not believe my baby ( big boy) is 20 months old today. Has it really been nearly two years that he entered our lives? I know people always tell you to enjoy it, it goes by fast....but literally, life is traveling at lightening speed. I was loading pictures last night and started looking at oldies from last summer- those chubby little cheeks and the dimpled wrists, where did they go??? I miss my baby but I am loving my ginger haired toddler.  4 more months till' the big TWO!

Signs

I am always looking for signs. When Noah was in the NICU no one got me flowers or balloons or any of the other celebratory baby things. There were no cigars passed around and no room filled with roses. My aunt is the only one who brought us something, everyone else seemed to be mourning or just didn't know what to do or say. My aunt brought us apple cider doughnuts and a mums plant. At the time I thought it was kind of a weird gift and honestly my husband and I will never be able to eat another apple cider doughnut again because it reminds us of that horrible first night.... but the mums plant did bring me my first sign of things to come.
On the day I was getting discharged without my baby, I picked up the lonely mum and quickly noticed a ladybug on it. A ladybug means good luck. a lady bug was a sign. It would be ok. I never mentioned it to anyone but later that week my mother mentioned to me that she saw a ladybug in the room on our day of discharge and it confirmed to me that it was a sign that everything would be alright.
When we were discussing having another baby I was looking for signs all over the place. I was trying to calculate due dates, linking them to birthdays or death dates of my grandparents....thinking someone that if it lined up with one of those, it would be a sign that they would be watching over us and that once again, everything would be alright.
Once I got pregnant I had a bad feeling from the start. I had this gut feeling that everything was not going to be alright. This sign I tried to ignore.
My period is due in a few days and after that we have the green light to try this again. I tried not to look into too many signs but I found one of those due date calculators, plugged in the date of my last period which should be July 12th, 2009 and up popped an estimated due date of 4-20-10. The baby we miscarried was conceived on 4-20-09. Is it a sign??? Obviously I am not trying to read into it and chances are we will not get pregnant right away, but it's nice to think that these little coincidences are somehow meant to be....

Only time will tell....

Just Beachy

Only 3.5 more work weeks left until we run away to the beach for a week, but who is counting?
and in honor of that, a new banner and a few pictures from my IL's lake house over memorial day.

P's & Q's

I have a truck driver mouth and I am not proud of it!
Growing up my parents never really used curse words, however my best friends parents cursed like sailors and so did their kids. I am not sure if I was the countless moments I spent at their house or just my own preference for self expression but I picked cursing up like a bad virus...and now as an adult I can't seem to stop.
I can control my mouth in public. For the most part I don't drop the F bomb lightly....but when I am mad and spirited and hot tempered, yikes.
Since having Noah I knew it would only be a matter of time before he started repeating...everything.  This might sound completely insane but there are times when I want him to repeat anything and everything just to validate his "normalness" ( o.k. that is so selfish of me to admit!)
Last night, out of no where, Noah starting proclaiming " Fah Fah FAAAAH". To translate, Noah calls Trucks "Trah", and Ducks " Dah"...so going by that pattern, Fah would be no other words except Fuck.
Ut Oh
We used planned ignore, everytime he said it, we didn't react. He upped the anti a few times, laughing and YELLING it but after he didn't get a reaction, he stopped.
It's time for some soap in Mommy's mouth!

Snips and Snails

Someday's...like yesterday, I am in complete awe of my little boy. I am sure every mother feels this way but seeing Noah laughing, playing  and running around our yard is my cherry on top. When Noah was born we were in the processing of buying/building our house. In fact, my entire pregnancy with him we spent at least 3-4 days a week house hunting until my 8th month when we found this land/building opportunity. At the time it was all so exciting, a new baby and a new house although it turned extremely overwhelming real quick! In the first few days after Noah was born I told my husband that I didn't want to go through with this house. It was a reminder of all the excitement in the past and at that point I didn't want to see the future beyond the NICU walls.
In the end we obviously went through with the house and life went on.

This is our first summer living in the house. Long time blog readers will recall we moved in a few days after Noah's first birthday and had his party on our second day in this house which ironically was the one year anniversary of him coming home from the hospital.

Last night my husband was mowing the lawn. I was inside, hot and getting impatient. Noah was screaming " OwShy OwShy OWSHY"- he wanted to go outside. So we did, and it was beautiful. One of those simple stop and think how wonderful moments. The kind of moments I wasn't sure if I'd have.

My sweaty stinking puppy dog is becoming such a little boy. Once upon a time I thought I wanted a daughter but seeing this little guy in all his dirty little boy glory on a hot summer night made me so happy that I got my snips and snails instead.

Self control

Glutton for punishment?
Sadomasochist?
Stupid?
These are the thoughts running through my head in regards to getting pregnant again. Obviously things are not perfect. For one, the marriage waters have been rough and choppy  although hopefully it is smooth sailing ahead. For two,  I had a miscarriage less than 2 months ago. For three, we still don't know the infamous why. So why is it that I want another baby so very badly?
I am going to go out on another TMI limb here.
Last night we were having sex. All the while I am thinking " I am fertile, I am going to get pregnant, maybe this is it, maybe this is our happy, healthy little girl we have been praying for, is he going to pull out?? Maybe he should pull out. What am I doing????"
and then he pulled out.
I am not going to lie, I was both totally relieved and yet slightly disappointed.  I knew why he pulled out ( we are not ready, I should wait at least another cycle, we have been fighting, money is tight, yadayadayada)  but I still asked him why?? Of course my husband made a silly joke about my "test" results ( the pelvic ultrasound I had last week) weren't back yet and I could have a twisted uterus. We had a good chuckle and went to bed. It's so simple when your a man, isn't it?
Right now it's about enjoying time as a family and communicating better and a whole lot of self control! I know that I am ovulating right now thanks to my clock work body and it's so hard not to just say " fuck it" and get pregnant. But that would be irrational and crazy....and I am not irrational and crazy. Right?
Praying for a "sticky" baby by fall....

Rose colored glasses

Does anyone know where I can get a pair?

Glass half empty gal marries boy who lives in a plastic bubble. This makes for an interesting union.

I have been thinking about the saying " Too blessed to be stressed", it's my new mantra. I try try try to let this lead me to eternal bliss but unfortunately it's not that simple.

Another new revelation: It's not just about Noah. I have spent the last 19.5 months "blaming" every ounce of anger, sadness, joy, tear, laugh, cry, yell, whatever on either what happened to Noah or what good was happening with him at the moment.  I basically stopped taking any ownership of anything and just assumed the way I was feeling was directly correlated to my child. Of course when you become a mother your child becomes  the biggest part of your life however I made it my entire life- good, bad and ugly.

The truth about Noah is that lately he is thriving. He has been thriving for his whole life ( well maybe after the first week or so) but now that he is talking ( yesterday he said his first two word phrase "Get Chu, as in I am gonna get you")..... I feel like walking on clouds. Every single time he starts hitting new milestones my heart just about swells until it's going to burst. How did I deserve this miracle? But anyway... the fact of the matter is that despite this walk on clouds type feeling...I am still moody and angry, a lot.

So hear ya have it folks- it wasn't and isn't all about Noah. I am not 100% who I am because he suffered birth trauma 19.5 months ago.  I am moody and angry because for one I have harbored anger towards my husband for far too long and for two, I need to do some heavy duty soul searching in order to find what it is that I have been hiding behind all these months.

Or perhaps I can just find some rose colored glasses

Anatomy of a miscarriage

Yesterday I went for a pelvic exam which I had put off for almost a year. Last summer I started having really bad pain ( an I mean really bad) around the time I ovulate. During my annual at the gyno last August she gave me a script to go get this exam done, but life got in the way and I never went. Since having the miscarriage I want to cover all of my bases before getting pregnant again and so after 10 months I finally made the appointment.
I really didn't think it was going to be a big deal, it was just an u/s at some radiology place. I was the youngest person in the waiting room by about 60 years ( no joke) and  while I was waiting to be called, in between reading old copies of Good Housekeeping, I worried that a) the U/S tech was going to be a male ( it was transvaginal w/one of those dildo looking wands, god help me if a man walked out and called my name!!!) and b) that I was going to pee my pants since I was instructed to drink a ton of water before hand.
A middle aged woman ::::sigh of relief:::: called my name and as soon as we walked into the room I felt a familiar lump form in my throat. The U/S chair, the machine, the wand...it brought back so many emotions. She excused herself so I could put on a gown and as soon as she left the room I started crying. It was all just another reminder that ultrasounds are not always a good thing since the last one I had reveled no baby and an empty sac. Oh and if I really want to back pedal, the last ultrasound I had done a few days before Noah was born, revealed the first sign that something was wrong with him. I should be almost 12 weeks pregnant now, I should be excited to be nearing the 2nd trimester, and instead of waiting alone for the U/S tech to come in to make sure I don't have something wrong with my girly parts , I should be here with my husband just in time for our 12 week U/S when the baby finally looks like a baby, wiggling around in my ever growing belly.
Ok back to reality. I composed myself. The tech came and did the ultrasound. I drove back to work listening to Michael Jackson throw backs , all the while missing my little January baby who I know would have been another boy who we would have named Kai.
This grief process has been very interesting to me. It creeps up on me when I least expect it. I didn't even cry when I started bleeding or when the ultrasound revealed an empty sac. I thought I was ok with it all and honestly was more concerned with it happening again than actually missing what was lost. Lately I can't stop missing what we had and what was taken away before we got a chance to really get to know it.
I never really understood miscarriage and how it affected people. I hate to even admit this but I really thought it was no big deal if it was early on, you just would get over it and try again. Once again through life's little curve balls I have learned another tough lesson, through another bump in the road...

Daycare Shmaycare

Daycare has been a struggle since the moment I went back to work in February 2008. While I love working and love my job, I love Noah even more and I hate leaving him. I have been fortunate enough to have family watching Noah and my job was flexible to let me have Monday's off. Basically Noah was with a different grandparent each day, for a period of time my husband was off on Thursday's and worked Saturday instead so that he could pitch in. It was working out but was very stressful. People ( i.e. my mother in law, who one day will get her own post) would cancel on me last minute causing me to have no babysitter and a job that I was expected to be at. I am also now expected to work Monday's and my husband is back to working Thursdays again. Lately my daycare situation is such a mish mosh of me driving Noah back and forth to various places, my sister in law helping out since she is home from college, taking vacation time, etc. I know in my heart that it's time to find a sitter, one who isn't related and is reliable and dependable, plus I think it would be good for Noah to not be so spoiled by grandparents and to be around other kids.  The idea however makes me sick to my stomach. I know he is getting older and bit by bit part of being a parent is letting go butttttttttt......he is still my baby!
Anyhow I am starting to search for a place for the fall, god help me when I have to drop him off for the first time!

Private?

Between my post about my marital issues and my addict father in law in a coma I am beginning to think it's a very good thing no one that I know in real life knows this blog exists! It has also got me thinking, how much is too much to share?
My life, in between the drama and chaos is pretty damn good. Overall we are happy, healthy, and in the grand scheme of things extremely blessed. I often struggle with my inner battle and let a lot of it drip out onto my blog. It's safe, I can say what I want, not too many people say anything back and I can't hurt anyone I love. This blog is like my dirty little secret...even though it's really not that dirty, lol.
Lately I wonder if I share too much. Should I really be typing the things that I type. Are these the thoughts that are meant for my head and not for others to see? I have never really been a private person. I wear my heart on my sleeve. My girlfriends and I talk about our most intimate issues and always get a good laugh. The gyno always chuckles at me due to the things that come out of my mouth. My husband and I have farted in front of each other since early on in our relationship ( ok maybe that was too much information). In shorter terms, I am a loud mouth who can't keep things quiet!
So for now I am guessing I will keep things public...because after all this is my private.

Father's

I have the worlds best father...well in my eyes anyway. I am so lucky to have had the unconditional love that I grew up with. In both becoming a parent and working as a social worker with children who rarely even know who their own father is, I have learned to appreciate mine in a whole new way.
My husband's  relationship with his father is much more complex. A product of a divorce and a father who seemingly disappeared and started over with a new family, my husband has had both a hard time learning to parent and a hard time defining his own relationship with the man who never really parented him.
In the past few years my husbands father has started to try, in his own way, to be a bigger part of his life. My father in law has always struggled with some sort of addiction but mostly hid his demons from his kids and as selfish as he is/was,  has made sure to let my husband know he loves him.
On Friday we got a call that my father in law is in a coma. He fell down the stairs thursday night in his home and was so drunk when the ambulance arrived with him at the ER that they had to put him in a medically induced coma to detox him from all the pain meds he has been taking. My husband, being the oldest and "next of kin" has had to sign off on this, making the decision to keep his father in a coma to rid him from the demons that probably prevented him from being a good father in the first place. When he "wakes up" it's on him whether or not he wants to go to rehab and for now we can only hope for once he will make the appropriate choice.
Yesterday while visiting him in the ICU I asked my husband if all of this made him sad. I couldn't imagine looking at my own father in that state, hooked up to a ventilator with tubes every which way. My husband answered, not really. This surprised me. He stated that if he was in a coma for a different reason or if he was not expected to live, than yes, it would sadden him deeply. But for now, looking down at the absentee father with a prescription pain killer addiction and a life filled with selfish choices- no, he wasn't really that upset. What a complex bag of emotions to carry, huh?
This got me thinking about how my husband parents Noah, how he is loves him so purely but doesn't seem to ever know what to do with him. Thinking about the lack of fatherhood in his early years puts a lot of it into perspective as does looking down at my helpless father in law whom no one is really shedding a tear over.
Today I am thankful for my own dad and for the father I know my husband is capable of being. He may not be "mr. wonderful" all the time but he loves his son and I know he would never be absent from his life.
Happy Father's Day.

Baby steps

I am starting to really miss our "baby". Initially the miscarriage wasn't really that hard for me. Yes, I was shocked and disappointed and fearful it would happen again but I coped and was feeling "ok". I am obviously still "ok" but growing sadder and sadder thinking about how I would almost be entering my second trimester. I know January is going to be really hard, right smack around new years. Hopefully I will be carrying a healthy little one by then!
I am still taking things one day at a time. I am trying to pay more attention to Noah and spend more quality time with him. My husband and I are trying not to raise our voices. This week has been positive and I keep telling myself rome wasn't built in a day.

O.k. I am back from my pity party.

I don't really feel the need to explain myself but I did want to say one thing before I move on. I love my little boy more than life itself and I by no means blame him for the negative path my life has sometimes taken this past year and half.  At times I feel I come across really pessimistic and maybe it's because I tend to post only when I am feeling really emotional, I dunno...but moving on...

My husband and I had a great talk on Saturday night. He took a drive. I vented on my blog. When he returned we sat on our back porch, he smoked a cigar and I had a marlboro light and we just communicated for once. I cried. He cried. But it was less about drama and us as individuals and more about our family and our future. Maybe there is some couples therapy in the works and maybe not, but it was definitely a good starting off point which gets me to my next topic, health.

I feel gross. I weigh 138 pounds which is heavier than I was 6 weeks post partum. I was always an exercise fanatic and I have become very out of shape. I am not a smoker but I have been bumming random cigarettes from people far too often. I drink way to much pinot and eat way too much cheddar cheese. Part of this has been the huge funk I have been in lately. Following the miscarriage I went over the edge in terms of indulging myself. It's time to stop. I know I have said this before but if I want to have more children I need to a) get my relationship under control and b) get myself under control. Lofty goals but necessary for our well being.

Stay tuned!

Oh and one more thing: picky eating is not our only challenge- we have now adding hitting to our list, any suggestions????

I wanted to delete that after I wrote it. Very melodramatic but very real to how I am feeling. Hubby and I got into a "fight" tonight, actually more of a discussion after Noah went to bed and I was pretty honest with how I feel. He hit the road as usual and is taking a drive. It felt REALLY good to get that out...I won't delete it since this is my 21st century journal after all.

The other toll....

Truth be told my marriage has suffered. My husband and I have always had a very tumultuous relationship filled with a lot of fighting but a lot of love. In the early days it was passion and now it's anything but. I'd like to think it started with what happened 19 months ago but the foundation of our troubles started long before that.
We met in October 1999, I was 18 he was 19 and we had both just started college. He was tall dark and handsome, the cutest boy I think I had ever seen. I was short, skinny and insecure and he swept me off my feet. He taught me what tears of joy were, what passion felt like and most of all through him I learned to love myself.
After a year or two things started to change. We both had a lot of growing to do and we seemed to grow apart. My insecurities opened up a door for him, and at times he would abuse this power that he knew he had over me. Often we would fight about anything and everything but I always clung to him, not sure if I could ever love someone the way I loved him. It was my first love and one I clenched fiercely. I often wonder if I held on too tight, should I have let go?
By the time we graduated college things were falling into place. I got in to a great grad program and he found the perfect job working for my uncle's business. He moved into an apartment that his parents owned and seeing as he was now working and I would have my master's soon we started to plan our marriage. He proposed on December 8th, 2004. I was 23 and he was 24. At the time I felt so very old but even typing 23 makes me shudder..we were babies. The time we spent planning out wedding was one of the best times of my life. The endless possibilities, the romance and fairy tale and most of all the thought of marrying my first love, that tall dark handsome boy who had swept me off my feet. We got married on 10-1-05, the day was unseasonably warm with not a cloud in the sky. I felt more beautiful that I ever have and had not a drop of insecurity as I walked down the aisle.
I'd like to say happily ever after followed, but not so much.
Right from the start we were on separate pages. He was all about making money, buying a house and having nice things. I wanted a baby. He was not ready. I wanted a smaller house in a family neighborhood. He wanted lots of land and to build. I drove a Honda. He drove and Audi. My husband does not know the art of compromise and this led to fight after fight after fight. Don't get me wrong, there was also a lot of love and some very good times but maybe we just weren't the right fit? No one's fault, just a bad match.
In December 2006 I got my way for once, we started to try for a baby. Three months later I got a positive pregnancy test and started the best 9 months of my life. We both rallied together. The fighting all but stopped. It was like planning a wedding, but better. Once again, the future was bright and the possibilities were endless.
On November 10th 2007 Noah entered our lives and changed them in more ways than we ever could have imagined. I sometimes imagine that day as being normal, me in my nursing gown laying in bed holding my son. My husband visiting with roses, friends and family bringing balloons. Would it have been different? Would our marriage look different today?
In those early days, when I would lay awake for hours, days even, the post partum depression so bad I contemplated suicide, my husband was no where to be found. Working late. Dinner with friends. He left me high and dry and alone. Was he coping- yes. But did he abandon me when I needed him the most- you bet. The resentment built. The stress of first time parenthood coupled with a sick newborn, tripled with building a home, it was too much for us to bear. The foundation was not there and our relationship began to crumble.
Truth be told things are not good. We love each other and we love Noah but honestly  I am not sure what's keeping us together. I really think it's time I start seeing a therapist but truthfully I'm not sure that has much to do with our marriage.
What a toll this has taken on us.

Patience

I have never been a patient person. I have never liked surprises. I picked out my own engagement ring, as a kid I always snuck a peak at my presents before christmas. I can't help myself, it's as if my mind is always on overdrive.
When I was pregnant with Noah it was the first time I ever stopped to slow down. Part of it was that I loved having him inside of me and I didn't want it to end, the other part was due to my ever growing belly and the heat of the summer of 2007. After Noah was born I wanted to go back in time. Since time machines are not a reality, I forced myself to focus ( and by this I mean obsess) on the future. For anyone, the future is scary. The uncertainty and the "surprise" factor. When a doctor is telling you "we'll just have to wait and see" in reference to your child's brain and future life functioning it made me crazy. I wanted answers that I couldn't get. So instead every month I looked forward to the next. It meant that Noah was getting older and he was doing well. At 6 months I wanted it to be a year and at a year I wanted it to be two. It always seemed in my mind I would feel better at the next stage but when it came, I just wanted to fast forward.
Don't get me wrong, "rushing" along my child's babyhood is bittersweet. I miss my baby and I know someday I will miss my strawberry blonde, gap toothed toddler. But with Noah I want a happy ending, and I want it to be here already. Logically I know this is not a healthy view but the mother in me just wants the best for my child and I want to be assured he will be ok.
.....however.....
Through Noah I have learned patience. One step at a time patience. No matter how hard I try I can't rush anything because this is his life and not mine. This leads me to my doctors appointment yesterday-
after going in for my post miscarriage check up be began talking about Noah's story and if there is any possible link to this miscarriage. The doctor believes I may have had a clot in the placenta causing Noah's growth issue at the end of my pregnancy and his apparent oxygen deprivation at some point during labor and delivery. The clotting issue may have also caused me to miscarry.
So I am going for all the testing to check for these clotting issues...and I was warned NOT to get pregnant for a few months and especially until we get this testing done.
So here it is,  a lesson in patience...yet again
